Introduction
As an Astrologer, I often get questions such as how does my chart show that I am Autistic? Or how can I tell if I am an ENFJ? Many of these questions I have pondered myself, and have done some digging, but the nature of Astrology isn’t as cut and dry as we would hope. Astrology is a vastly complicated art that is mutli-faceted, and is rich and deep as the human experience itself. It’s never a safe bet to isolate one placement, or single aspect and claim that it gives a definitive definition to something that you can find neatly categorized in the DSM-5. One must always take, and consider a natal chart as a whole to really determine something explicit as looking for signs of a complicated diagnosis. Through exploration of charts of people who are clearly neurodivergent, there is one outline aspect that is especially standing out. That aspect is expedient Mercury making a confrontational square to iconoclastic Uranus.

What Does Mercury Mean?
Before we take a dive into the aspect of Uranus squaring Mercury, let’s take a step back and break things down piece by piece. Starting with the Planet Mercury, this is a fast moving, and often agitated energy that has been in the consciousness of Mankind for millennia.
Since the beginning of human sentience, we have been looking towards the heavens and observing the Messenger of the Gods. Mercury is the closest planet to our life-giving Sun, and zips around the yellow star at a whooping 107,082 miles per hour! The Solar year on Mercury is quite fleeting, clocking in at less than 88 days! Enough with the Astronomy lessons here, we are talking about Astrology after all.

What is the Meaning of Uranus?
Being “discovered” or as I like to see it, brought to the attention of human perception in 1781, the Planet Uranus was blind to ancient Astrologers due to the vast distance in our solar system, leaving it cloaked to the naked eye. Uranus is often distinguished as the higher octave of our fast-friend Mercury. When humans first laid eyes on Uranus way back in 1781, it seemed to coincide with an uptick in technology, allowing men to leave the farms and into factories, kicking off the industrial age. Uranus is associated with innovation and technology, people with a prevalent Uranian placement are often competent scientists and inventors. While Mercury is associated with intelligence, Uranus often describes genius, although not always in the classical definition with someone having an egregious IQ.
Mercury is more about mundane concrete thinking. Things that are tangible and can be observed and manipulated with the 5 senses. Uranus on the other hand goes beyond what we can sense and is often correlated with what is abstract and conceptual. Both Mercury and Uranus can be tied to the Trickster archetype, and people with strong placements of these two planets have a strong mischievous side to them. Confused? That’s ok. I see the human consciousness of Mercury and Uranus as akin to the evolution of the Nordic Deity Loki. Looking past the Marvel Comic Universe, Loki is the God of Mischief personified. In early Norse Anecdotes, Loki started as a nuisance that annoyed the likes of other Gods such as Thor and Tyr. Using illusions and deception, Loki took joy in being a divine pain in the ass. The devilish tendencies of the swindler only grew in something more concerning, as Loki played a huge role in Ragnarök, leading an army of undead and Jotuns into Asgard to trigger the end of existence according to the Norse perspective. Human interpretation of the Trickster Archetype started more simply in a Mercurial fashion, only to grow with scientific foundations into something more brooding and chaotic as rabble-rousing Uranus entered into our psyches. The Outer Planets, invisible to meek human acumen, propelled humanity with an expansion of sentience and consciousness, making us stray further away from our primitive ancestors.

What is the Square in Astrology?
To reiterate the point that ancient Astrologers often erroneously associated certain planets, placements, and aspects as purely negative isn’t conducive to the art of Astrology. The aspect of the square is a prime example of this. Though frictional in nature, the square is a 90 degree aspect in horoscopes often showing 2 points of contention between two or more planets. Certainly, planets forming a square can indeed be “bad,” considering a square as a fault in whole is a gross oversimplification. Some speculate an opposition, which is a 180 degree aspect traditional Astrologers often shame, to be showing something external of the chart holder that is causing grievance in their life. However, looking at the square, it indicates an internal friction going on within the native of the chart. Like Saturn, the ancient nemesis of the skies, a square slowly matures like a fine wine with age and experience – that is if you put the work into it. So to speak, a square early on can be more problematic, but through patience and perseverance, a square can become a superpower if fleshed out properly. However if the native chooses not to partake in self-improvement, the square will not sit idly, and will often prove to be a thorn in the side of the chart holder.
Combining Mercury Square Uranus.
Ok, we got all the ingredients, let’s combine them to make our mouthy, oppositional cake. This combination is quite volatile in nature, People with this placement are greatly known to put their own foot in their mouths, savoring the sweat and toe jam they have accumulated running away from the proverbial villagers chasing them with flaming torches and pointed pitchforks. At the beginning of this article, I mentioned correlations with Astrology and Autism. Though this isn’t a definitive sign you are on the Spectrum of Autism, I do believe that those with this tumultuous pairing often are. As aforementioned, Mercury is the planet of communication. Wherever it may be placed in the chart, determines how effective, and preferences of speaking, writing, and most importantly of all – listening. Now let’s unify Mercury’s chattiness with the non-conforming nature of the Sky God Uranus.
Uranus is known for its defiance. Somewhere in all of our charts, we got this element where we are disagreeable with the status quo. Now let's take the brutal nature of the square and what do we get? We get someone who often struggles to hold their tongue when others deem it would be appropriate. While sometimes this is completely unintentional, people with this placement often gleam with delight as they piss people off! Why do I utter the words Autism here? People on the spectrum are often pariahed not only for their social dissent, but also for slips of the tongue that sometimes isn’t meant to offend, but through neurodivergence, it often does. Though sometimes Uranus squared Mercury folks falter when speaking with peers, many get pure joy from harassing the masses! Through my escapades of reading various charts, I am starting to see the commonality in people who love to troll. Who is one of the biggest trolls who owns one of the biggest trolling platforms? Elon Musk! (Read the article I wrote on Musk’s chart here, his typing video here, and his chart reading video here)
Am I doomed if I have Uranus Squaring Mercury?
So far, you might be agreeing with the ancients, Mercury making a square to Uranus sounds shitty as fuck! Hear me out, there is a purpose to this outrageous pairing. Throughout decades of interpreting tens of thousands of charts, Jeffrey Wolf Green deliberated the theory of the Four Natural Evolutionary Conditions. In his book Pluto: The Evolutionary Journey of the Soul, Green describes the first Natural Evolutionary Condition he coined as the dimly evolved, or de-evolved state. Green stated that two three percent of the population struggle with conditions such as deformities and retardations. Green speculated these souls are new to the human experience, or de-evolved due to past life karma. A vast majority of people are what Green deemed as the herd state. Being self-explanatory, people in the herd state are the cattle that graze the grassy fields of indoctrination while they either watch CNN or Fox News. Making up around 20% of the population, we find the individuated state. These folks are coming into their own and are straying away from the herd. It’s safe to assume most people with Mercury Square Uranus fit into this category. Not to leave you hanging, the rest of the population fit into the spiritual state. Think of the Ghandis and Buddhas of the world.

Seeing that most of the masses are stuck in the herd state, they mindlessly stare at various screens accepting society as it appears on the surface. If you are someone who has Mercury square Uranus, you were born to question these social norms. Though it may seem like a burden, which it often is, people like us are meant to wake up those who comfortably sleep. Of course, we won’t get to everyone, but we are meant to question what others ignorantly accept, even if it's to our detriment. It would be nice to think that all folks with Uranus making a square to Mercury are crusaders of truth and free thought, there are plenty of us who are living in our mom’s basements masturbating with cheese whiz while harassing those who are numbing their minds on World of Warcraft. I would consider those who troll aimlessly as an immature incarnation of this energy. Perhaps they will one day see they have a purpose to go beyond this most basic expression of the Trickster Archetype. I’m not going to lie, it can be fun at times to let loose and cause a little mischief now and then!
The Curse of Knowledge
No, I’m not quoting that Barney the Dinosaur wannabe from the Avengers Franchise, I am talking about the combination of common knowledge and the more abstract variety of thinking that throws all of us into the new eon. Don’t get me wrong, having a gifted level of intelligence has its benefits, but we all have gotten the gift we later sold on Craigslist. People in the herd state blissfully graze on the cud of pastures sown by the seeds of the elite. Shrouded by ignorance, I’m sure they have many peaceful nights of sleep after fondling themself to season three of Game of Thrones. Mercury and Uranus are both chaotic energies. When combined with the uproarious nature of the square, it can give one a restless, overactive mind. Insomnia must strike many with this aspect at night as they lay in bed pondering the mysteries of the universe. Being a double-edged sword, this allows natives with the Mercury square Uranus aspect to conjure up theories and breakthroughs that advance society into the next stage of evolution.
Most geniuses throughout history have only been appreciated and recognized posthumously. While alive, I would imagine many people with Uranus square Mercury have fallen victim to public humiliation, and graphic execution witnessed and conducted by those in the herd state. Yes, people with Mercury square Uranus can be quite the nuisance, many with this placement only want the best for their fellow man, whether the masses know it’s good for them or not. Going back to the autism paradigm, people both on the spectrum and people with this placement are often well-intentioned. However, intelligence is usually only appreciated in theory, when practiced, those without conceptual insight often fear what they don’t understand. Finding comfort in the familiar, those who defy conformity carry quite the burden to be trailblazers.
